About the last post…

Sorry about the last thing I wrote – it wasn’t meant to be a rant lol.

I was actually having a good day, I am just very upset about this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7189556.stm

I don’t know why it is bugging me so much, but it really made me think a lot – children are living in cages like animals and we do nothing. The last post is about me more than anything else; my trivial problems seem so selfish in comparison to this.

Then I was thining about child soldiers – from a young age they are taught to hate and to kill. I don’t even let my cousins play with water guns with me; the act of pulling a trigger towards someone is abhorrent to me. There is a conservative estimate of 300,000 child soldiers in the world today. But what I think I was trying to get at is that we have two types of cultures and two types of nations forming:

 1) taught how to hate – this happens when generations grow up in war, like in Palestine, like in Africa etc

2) taught how to be selfish – where capatalism and materialism and individualism are promoted and encouraged by the government and the people start to think of themselves as a unit; and not their family or society as the unit they belong too. For example, I saw a case where a young woman had her children taken from her for adoption. By herself, she could not look after them. But her extended family, her cousins etc, when they found out about her problems, stepped in to help her; they were dedicated, sincere and true and altogether, they provided a solid family and support network for these children. However, the court didn’t care – it all rested on the mother as the unit; the mother was not fit enough in their opinion and so her kids were taken away. These are the type of socities that we are growing up in – Britain, America etc.

The cure to this is Islam – and we see pockets of Islam emerging in both types of these socities – this is the cure for these problems, but only if propogated properly. If we take a step back we can see this – it’s like when you see a line of “sweet” water in the sea; non-salty water making a line in the sea; only small but one which refuses to mix with the other water and it is such an amazing phenomenon, SubhanAllah.

But then I know that charity starts at home, and there are so many people in our own societies suffering and hurting; and we see it but we don’t – we can’t really step into their shoes properly, and this isn’t necessarily because we don’t care or are not concerned; a lot of the times we are – but it is because, when you have grown up in a culture of selfishness, it is hard to have as much as an open mind as you believe you have; it’s hard to step into the shoes of someone else. Maybe this is a bigger problem for us; that a selfish culture pehaps has spared us from being inherently selfish, but has severely and dramatically inhibited our capacity for empathy.

Allahu Alim. Now this is turning into a random piece!

So apologies about the last post! I still believe people have the capacity to be good, great even. I still believe that human dignity, like sweet water in the ocean, can shine through, Insha’Allah.
